The first step in effective tattoo aftercare begins immediately after getting inked. Your artist will usually apply a protective bandage or wrap to shield your new tattoo from bacteria and dirt. It’s essential to follow their instructions regarding how long this covering should stay on—typically ranging from a few hours to overnight—before gently removing it.

Once unwrapped, cleaning is paramount. Use lukewarm water and mild, fragrance-free soap to wash away any plasma or excess ink gently.
